Medical Technician (Phlebotomist)

Duties include, but are not limited to:
Performing venipunctures associated with tolerance tests, time tests, stat tests, and routine requests throughout the Hospital; Utilizing patient identification methods; Providing customer service for those utilizing the laboratory services; Processing and accessioning in laboratory orders through VISTA; Answering telephones and referring unanswered questions to the appropriate source for correct information/assistance; Processing blood, urine, and other body fluid specimens as necessary for testing; Performing centrifugation, aliquoting, and determination of acceptable specimens; Performing other related duties as assigned. NOTE:
Intermittent employment is defined as non-fulltime employment in which employees serve under an excepted or competitive service appointment without a regularly scheduled tour of duty. A position with an intermittent work schedule is sporadic and unpredictable so that a tour of duty cannot be regularly scheduled in advance. Intermittent positions offer health insurance only if the employee is expected to work at least 130 hours per month for at least 90 days. DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION:
Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received. Work Schedule:

SPECIALIZED
Experience:
Have at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-4) in the Federal Service that has equipped you with the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the duties of a Medical Technician, GS-05. Qualifying specialized experience includes:
Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings; performing routine laboratory procedures; performing a variety of laboratory tests; using a variety of laboratory equipment; collecting and receiving samples and specimens; processing laboratory specimens for shipment. A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. -OR- EDUCATION:
Have successfully completed a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours with course work directly related to the work of this position (i.e. chemistry, biological sciences, hematology, microbiology, serology, etc) and must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. NOTE:

Have equivalent combinations of successfully completed post high school education (beyond the second year) and specialized experience, as described above, which meet the total experience requirements for this grade level. If education is used to meet specialized experience requirements, then such education must include courses directly related to the work of the position and must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
